Parmigiano-Reggiano or Parmesan?

Is Parmigiano-Reggiano the same cheese as Parmesan? Is this the Italian cheese equivalent of “appellation controllé? For many of us, we just don't know the answer to these questions. The answer seems to lie in where and how it is produced.
