Akaroa Salmon's salmon

A family salmon farm

Tom Bates used to row every day out his salmon farm at the entrance of Akaroa harbour, and row back again at night. He founded Akaroa salmon nearly 30 years ago and has continued to be involved ever since.

Akaroa Salmon sell most of their fresh salmon to restaurants. That speaks volumes about their service and quality. If the restaurants want Akaroa salmon, you can bet it’s good fish.

Conventional wisdom suggests that salmon grown on sea water has more flavour than salmon grown in fresh water. Certainly more of New Zealand farmed king salmon is grown in cages in salt water. Perhaps it’s the salt, maybe it’s the texture, but chefs seem to prefer it.

You can buy Akaroa’s salmon at their factory shop or online. Their salmon is among the freshest fish you can buy. It’s time from harvest to delivery is shorter than most other fish available, particularly when shipped directly from the pack house.
