Mangonui Fish Shop

An icon of the north

Mangonui Fish Shop1 The Mangonui Fish shop is on a wharf at Mangonui, a township in a harbour on the east coast way up north in the Magnonui Harbour in Doubtless Bay.

The List may endorse some take home meals and the fish and chips at Mangonui Fish Shop are arguably the best example of New Zealand’s favourite take home meal.

You can eat your fish and chips on the wharf where the shop is. There’s an all-weather partially screened and covered area with tables and chairs and umbrellas where you can sit and eat and look out across the fantastic view over Mangonui Harbour and Doubless Bay.

The potato chips are cooked in light oil so they come out crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The fish is caught locally and is cooked to order. It’s often hapuku, bluenose, gemfish or other firm-fleshed deep water species. It’s cooked in a light crispy batter that doesn’t leave your mouth feeling greasy, is moist and steaming when you break it open and tastes fresh as though it was caught yesterday.

Don’t miss it if you’re up that way.
